Certificate Program (HETLCP)

Higher Education Teaching and Learning Certificate Program (HETLCP). This program aims to expose faculty members to many aspects, strategies, and newer modes of teaching and learning, and to become more aware of the complexities of “teaching effectiveness,” and of articulating and achieving “Learning Objectives.” It also aims to explore and advance an informed and critical understanding of different scholarly approaches to learning, teaching, and assessment practices. The ultimate goal of the program is to provide faculty members with an environment in which to advance innovative and creative approaches to academic practice and to encourage focused and critical reflection on teaching through developing the participants’ ability to evaluate their academic practice critically. Topics covered will include; curriculum design, assessment, reflective teaching, conducting action research, and peer review of teaching, among other topics. - There will NOT be a fee required to take part in the program from the participants. - It will be considered within your annual performance evaluation.

  • Describe and discuss different theoretical perspectives on, and approaches to, student learning within specific educational contexts
  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the design, implementation, and assessment of constructively aligned curricula appropriate for the subject and the level of study
  • Recognize the diverse learning needs of students and formulate relevant and inclusive learning support and guidance strategies
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the complex and changing HE environment and the implications for professional academic practice
  • Recognize the key features of quality assurance, enhancement, and evaluation within the context of PSU and the wider HE arena.
  • Integrate scholarly activity, educational research and/or practice-based learning to enhance teaching and the student learning experience

  • Make appropriate decisions in planning and teaching situations which will enhance student learning and promote ethical and inclusive professional practice
  • Abstract and synthesize information from a wide range of inputs, and use this to inform professional practice
  • Analyze, critique, and evaluate their own practice in order to solve identified problems as an integral feature of continuous quality improvement
  • Integrate pedagogic research and scholarly activity into own professional practice

  • Act autonomously in the role and responsibilities of a Higher Education professional practitioner within the wider social context
  • Adjust their teaching approach to respond to individual and diverse student needs to enhance student learning and promote professional practice
  • Establish and maintain appropriate working relationships with colleagues and learners
  • Show how they engage in continuing professional development in subjects/disciplines and their pedagogy, incorporating research, scholarship and the evaluation of professional practices in line with the dimensions of the UK Professional Standards Framework

Participants will be expected to be able to:


  • Communicate ideas and expertise in a range of formats appropriate to different target audiences
  • Illustrate group -working, problem-solving and time management skills and the ability to reflect on own and others’ practice
  • Actively seek feedback and a constructive appraisal from peers and provide supportive feedback to colleagues within and beyond their discipline area with a view to enhancing subsequent practice
  • Produce a comprehensive and structured portfolio of evidence with reference to the UKPSF - Demonstrate appropriate use of technology to enhance innovative teaching and support of learning.

Fellows

The majority of graduates have gone on to become fellows, senior fellows, or principal fellows of the Higher Education Academy located in London, UK. Prince Sultan University was the first in the region to have both Principal and Senior fellows along with the largest number of fellows.
