SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Operational measures

Prince Sultan University is involved in several industrial, academic, governmental, local, and international collaborations that are leading the way in the search for sustainable consumption and waste disposal. Policies are formulated and in place in the university that tackles different waste disposal, and ethical food sourcing and supplies. Various activities such as forums, workshops and outreach were done in this regard. Partnership with companies such as Jahez that values sustainability in their work processes provides big impact to the university and its community.

PepsiCo and PSU Activate First Student Led Competition

CL MOU

Student competition on Zero Waste initiative shortlisted 5 groups. The participants focused on different environmental challenges such as using cloud computing for sustainability, waste disposal locator and pollution monitoring, recycling, IoT and NFC in waste disposal, using RFID on electronic wastebin, and waste management systems.

“Green Economy and Environmental Protection – Saudi Vision 2030” Forum

Green Economy

Through the Compliance Office, a forum on Green Economy and Environmental Protection was conducted that participated by different experts on sustainability. The keynote speaker was Mr. Asad Naqvi, Head of the Secretariat, the UN Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE)and Head of the Secretariat, the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP), wherein he talked about “tackling the economic and environmental crises together”.

Research

Energy, Water, and Environment Lab

REL

The establishment of a new applied science and engineering research Lab (EWE) is of great importance to PSU from different aspects, including teaching, research, training, partnership with stakeholders,

national and international collaboration, exchange of students and staff, visibility and ranking, creation of startups and joint venture, as well as society engagement. The main research activities at EWE focus mainly on hot topics which are of great importance towards Sustainability and Circular Economy in the Kingdom.

  • Circular and sustainable economy: recycling, waste management, and transformation.
  • Green technologies: industrial decarburization, green molecules (like ammonia and hydrogen).
  • Treatment of effluents (hospitals, pharmaceuticals, dairy products, steel and aluminum industries, pigments, and paints, etc.).
  • Biomedical field like cancer imaging and therapy
  • Agriculture like biopesticides and biofertilizers, insects sensing and remediation.
  • Air pollution and remediation: such as gas sensing and airborne treatment.
  • Anticorrosion.

Renewable Energy Lab

REL

Research Labs such as Renewable Energy Lab, who are in cooperation with Power and Telecom Technologies Co., KFB Holding Group, Riyadh for a collaborative consultancy project on investigations on minimizing electricity cost and feasibility study of self-sustainable campus.

Research Projects such as the Sustainable Nano grid based Networked Electricity - A Paradigm shift for Electricity Infrastructure, was done to provide the community with an alternative to the grid and diesel-powered electricity. This is just one of the project of this Research Lab and more research and project are being done.

  • Clear plan for executing energy saving measures by identifying the energy Intensive electrical utilities inside the campus
  • Economic analysis for power quality improvement and energy savings
  • Identifying the electrical inefficient processes in the campus
  • Financial benefit (reduction in the billing cost), investment and payback period

Sustainable Architecture Lab

SAL

The SA Lab functions within the framework of the Architecture program at Prince Sultan University. Aligned with the Saudi Vision 2030, the SA Lab engages in diverse research areas crucial to the development and societal welfare of Saudi

Arabia. The interdisciplinary team focuses on topics that contribute to the university's strategic research goals, articularly within the context of environmental sustainability practices.

Structures and Material Lab

SAL

The Structures and Materials (S&M) Research laboratory was recently established with the aim to promote the scientific research environment at PSU through national and international collaborations with industrial and academic

partners in multidisciplinary areas related to Structural Engineering, Materials, Composites, and Geotechnical and transportation Engineering. The lab team was successful in attracting several key collaborations including Saudi Aramco (KSA), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Deltares research firm (Netherland), Queen's University Belfast (UK), University of Limerick (Ireland), KAUST (KSA), and United Arab Emirate University (UAE).
